Best Lake District Views - My Top 10 favourites!

This view of Wastwater was voted Britain’s Favourite View in 2007 by television viewers so has to be included!

My personal #Top 10 Best Lake District views

I've visited the Lake District a lot over the years and being a keen walker & photographer I've explored many of the fells, valleys and lakes in search of the best views. There are many beautiful sights in the lakes around every corner (it's a world UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason) and I'd recommend anyone with a love of the outdoors and landscapes to visit the area.

In terms of my best views - some places are really accessible that anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can walk too whereas others require a bit more effort. Below are my favourite top 10 views:

#1 View from Low Fell, looking towards Crummock Water, Lake District - Best Lake District View

I'll start with a not so well-known view from Low Fell which is a little away from the main tourist areas - so it's not as popular as some of the more well-known Lake District fells. It is not that difficult to walk up and presents some stunning views and is well worth a visit, particularly on a summers evening when the sun is going down behind you, illuminating this magnificent landscape. You can find out more about how to get to this viewpoint on my Low Fell blog post here

#2 Looking over Buttermere Lake towards Fleetwith Pike & Haystacks - Best Lake District View

This is a much photographed view of the lone tree looking over Buttermere lake towards Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks (Alfred Wainwrights favourite Lake District mountain). Buttermere is perhaps my favourite lake to walk around in the Lakes as it's not very busy and not that long a distance. To find out more about this particular viewpoint and Buttermere walk view this blog post

#3 Ullswater from Green Hill enroute to Gowbarrow Fell - Best Lake District View

A stunning view of Ullswater from Green Hill on this Gowbarrow fell walk, looking towards Glenridding in the distance and the Helvellyn range. This is a lovely walk whatever the season providing some of the best views of Ullswater, and also includes Aira Force. To find out where this particular view of Ullswater is visit this blog post

#4 View from Haystacks, Buttermere - Best Lake District View

Possibly the best sunset I have ever witnessed in the Lake District - from Haystacks near Buttermere - looking towards Crummock Water & Ennerdale. Haystacks was Alfred Wainwrights favourite Mountain and with this view you can see why. In terms of walking to the summit of Haystacks - most people start from Buttermere lake and whilst there is some steep walking - it's not as strenuous as some of the higher peaks in the Lake District. You can find out about my favourite route to walk to the summit of Haystacks here

#5 Blea Tarn looking towards the Langdale Pikes, Lake District - Best Lake District View

Blea Tarn is one of my most favourite of places in all the lakes and is actually quite accessible as you can drive all the way up to the tarn. This particular view is from a little above the tarn but the views by the tarn are just as stunning and one of the most photographed places in the lakes. You can find out more on Blea Tarn here

#6 View over Derwent Water towards Borrowdale from Castlehead - Best Lake District View

Derwent Water is a magnificent place and there are many great views to be had of it looking towards the Borrowdale Valley. This particular impressive view is from Castlehead (more information on how to get here can be found on this link). However for a more accessible (and even wheelchair friendly) view - the view from Friars Crag more close to the waters edge is equally impressive.

#7 Fairfield, from Deepdale Valley - Best Lake District View

This view is little-known - but I like it. It's looking towards the summit of Fairfield - from Deepdale. The river in the foreground made for a nice little composition. And because this Fairfield walking route via Deepdale isn't one of the most well-known - the valley is often quite quiet. Find out more about this view here

#8 Loughrigg Tarn from Loughrigg Fell - Best Lake District View

Loughrigg Fell is relatively small in height but the views are immense on every part of this walk. Here is a stunning view of Loughrigg Tarn from Loughrigg Fell with the Langdale Pikes in the distance. Find out more about this Loughrigg Fell walk here

#9 Grasmere from Loughrigg Terrace - Best Lake District View

Grasmere is one of the most famous places in the lakes and in my opinion the best view of Grasmere lake is from Loughrigg Terrace and it's quite an easy walk to do. Find out more about this Grasmere walk here

#10 Waswater, from Wasdale Head - Best Lake District View

I will end this 'Best Lake District Views' post with this view of Wastwater, perhaps the most iconic Lake District view as it was voted Britain’s Favourite View in 2007 by television viewers. Wastwater is perhaps the most dramatic looking of all the lakes due to being surrounded by the towering peaks of Red Pike, Kirck fell, Great Gable and Englands highest mountain Scafell Pike.

What's your favourite view in the Lakes? Do you have some that are not featured on here? Leave a comment and let me know :-)
